Steinar Krogstad viste støtte til Palestina

LOs nestleder Steinar Krogstad holdt et innlegg i solidaritet med Palestina på den årlige ILO-konferansen i Genève.

International Labour Organisation, som er FNs arbeidslivsorganisasjon samler årlig representanter fra 187 land til konferanse.

ILO er den eneste organisasjonen i FN som har trepartssamarbeid med representanter fra både myndigheter, arbeidsgivere og arbeidstakere.

Ber om våpenhvile

Under årets konferanse var det et ekstra fokus på Palestina. LOs nestleder benyttet anledningen til å komme med en støtteerklæring til våre palestinske kamerater som lever under okkupasjon og brutal krig.

– Situasjonen har aldri vært verre. Over 36 500 folk har blitt drept, og minst 83 000 har blitt skadet. Over en halv million jobber har gått tapt som følge av okkupasjon og krig. De psykiske og fysiske traumene som er påført et helt folk vil påvirke flere generasjoner fremover, sa Krogstad til forsamlingen i FN.

Takket Norge

International Labour Organisation gir årlig ut en rapport om situasjonen i de okkuperte områdene i Palestina, og ser særlig på hvoedan okkupasjonen fra Israel påvirker arbeidstakerrettigheter og menneskerettigheter.

På årets ILO-konferanse ble det nok en gang lagt frem en rapport om situasjonen i Palestina. Flere land kom med støtteerklæringer til Palestina og takket Norge for anerkjennelsen av den palestinske staten.

Israel må holdes ansvarlig

Krogstad understrekte at alle stater har et ansvar for å legge press på Israel.

– Jeg ber alle ILO-medlemmer om å fordømme Israels angrep og okkupasjon, og holde Israel ansvarlig etter internasjonale lover for gjentatte brudd på folkeretten. Det palestinske folk må få si frihet, sa Krogstad.

First, I would like to thank the Director-General for organizing this session and presenting a well-researched report despite Israel's refusal to grant access to document the situation.For 44 years, the ILO has detailed the impact of the Israeli occupation on labor rights. Never has the situation been worse. We are witnessing a catastrophe!

Over 36,500 people have been killed and nearly 83,000 injured. More than half a million jobs have been lost. The psychological and physical traumas will leave lasting scars.In the West Bank, there are almost daily incursions by the Israeli army into refugee camps and frequent raids in urban centers like Jenin, Ramallah, Hebron, and Jericho. Since October 7, Israel has demolished or confiscated 904 Palestinian structures, displacing over 2,038 people. Illegal settlements are expanding, and violence from settlers and the Israeli army is increasing.

We need a ceasefire now!

Gaza is in ruins with no functioning labor market. The private sector in the West Bank is reeling. Before the war in Gaza, around 177,000 Palestinians worked in Israel; now only a fraction still have jobs.

Social security coverage in Palestine is limited, covering less than 40 percent of the population. As of June 5, UN member states have disbursed only 31 percent of the amount requested to meet the most critical needs in Palestine.

More aid is urgently needed!

Clearence revenues constitute two-thirds of the Palestinian Authority's revenues. Since October 7, Israel has been deducting almost three-quarters of these revenues, forcing the Palestinian Authority to reduce payments to civil servants to 50-65 percent of their salaries and delay disbursements.

We must address Israel's illegal withholding of Palestinian tax revenues, a critical issue highlighted in point 62 of the report.

While I acknowledge the Director General's recommendations, it is evident that Israel shows no willingness to voluntarily comply with the ILO's demands.

Therefore, I call upon the ILO and its members to hold Israel accountable according to international standards by implementing concrete measures.

Israel cannot have veto rights over Palestinian self-determination. We are proud that Norway has recognized Palestine as a state. Palestinians must have the opportunity to develop their own economy without restrictions, including free access to resources, trade, and investments.

Let us implement the necessary actions to ensure compliance with international standards and safeguard the rights and dignity of these workers.
